After 13 hours and a long bus ride, members from the Renaissance Varsity Chorus arrived at Morgan State University for the first stop of their annual college tour. “This is the first year in four years that we were able to go on tour and I’m really excited by the way it turned out,” said choral music instructor, Patrice DeBose.
It would have been nearly impossible for any student in DPS to ignore the turmoil taking place in Detroit schools over the past few months; budget problems, sick out protests, and bills that seem more ‘reluctant appeasement plan’ than long term solutions. As a senior, the first reaction to these issues is an eye roll and and a shrug.
After rumors that graduation would be postponed and seniors would be required to serve extra days due to their low attendance rate, seniors at Renaissance came together to resolve this. Seniors typically plan a skip day to celebrate how far they’ve come, but this year some seniors decided to speak against it, going against the popular decision in favor of logic. “Why is there a skip day if no one comes to school in the first place,” asked senior Krishauna Fisher.
Renaissance High School is lending a helping hand to Flint. “It makes me proud to see my school give to those who aren't able to give back to us. Renaissance is more than what we seem,” said junior Tiaunna Bradley. Flint has been declared a federal emergency due to lead contamination in the water.
The Lady Phoenix beat the Mustangs of Mumford, 81-57, on Feb. 8, giving them a chance to face the King Crusaders in the PSL finals.
Following the sick-out and teacher-organized protests that occurred in late January, the Renaissance community was shocked to learn that one of their teachers, Math instructor Zachary Sweet, was targeted by an injunction to appear in court leveled by the Detroit Public School district. “When I received the notice of the injunction, I was confused as to why there was no official reason given for it,” Sweet said.
Renaissance students stood in agreement with their teachers on Jan. 25 as they protested the poor quality materials, learning environment conditions and lack of funding in Detroit Public Schools. DPS teachers have held protests throughout the school year demanding that they receive better working conditions, as well as better pay and health care benefits.
