Two years ago at Mumford lunch was only 30 minutes long, but starting last year, the lunch hour is really an hour long. During the short lunch period students barely had enough time eat.
It was a day of firsts for Texas native Taelor Moore when she attended a field trip to Blake’s Orchard in Armada, MI on Oct.
First, it was Osborn. After visiting the school last spring, new superintendent Nikolai Vitti proposed merging the three small high schools on the Osborn campus into one school starting last fall. Now the rest of the small schools in the district will have their turn. The Detroit Public School Community District Board of Directors met in the Mumford HS auditorium on Tuesday, May 9, and voted to combine the small schools at Cody, Mumford and Ben Carson/Crockett in their respective buildings.
Mumford hosted the Detroit premiere of a new movie, on Feb. 15. “A Shot in the Dark” is a documentary about a high school basketball team from Chicago and the challenges they face as they pursue dreams of college and careers in basketball.

In a 60-58 nail-biter, the Mumford varsity girls basketball team beat Renaissance on Feb. 16 to win the Public School League championship for the first time in the school’s 68 year history. “I’m on cloud nine,” said head coach Kareem Hogan after he climbed out of the post-game pile of screaming players.
Our new superintendent has a learning disability. Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Detroit Public Schools Community District’s (DPSCD) new superintendent has a master’s degree from Wake Forest University along with a master’s and a doctorate from Harvard University.
Mumford High School is one of 13 schools that returned to DPSCD this fall after being part of the Education Achievement Authority (EAA) for the past six years, and that has meant some changes for students and staff.
Detroit Piston Andre Drummond came to Mumford on Oct. 24 to surprise the school, present the boys and girl’s basketball teams with a check for $5000 and to share his love of milk. Mumford submitted the winning video in a contest sponsored by Drummond and the United Dairy Industry of Michigan.
