Program seeks to diversify STEM

According to 2018 data from the Pew Research Center, black engineers and scientists represent only 9% of STEM workers. Initiatives are in place to increase these numbers, starting as early as elementary and high school. SMASH Wayne State is one of these programs.

Family from robotics

In most competitions, such as athletics, Detroit high schools are rivals. But at the Detroit Hispanic Development Corp. (DHDC), students from various Detroit high schools gather as family for robotics.


This year’s senior class at Cristo Rey had 296 individual college acceptances from 210 universities and 83 community colleges.

Cristo Rey seniors accepted to college

For the ninth year in a row, Detroit Cristo Rey High School seniors have reached 100% college acceptance. At an assembly on Jan. 31 the entire school celebrated the news with applause, cake, and encouraging words from President Mike Khoury.

Happy holidays? Not for those with seasonal depression

It is important to recall that not everyone is put into a holly jolly mood with the snowfall and more hours spent inside. Many people experience a type of seasonal depression, called Seasonal Affective Disorder, in which one will seem more retreated and isolated during the fall and winter months.

Techniques to handle teen stress

Life for teenagers is stressful. Challenging environments and immigration concerns are issues teens at Cristo Rey face that add stress to their lives. In addition to these challenges, teens at the high school still deal with additional stress from classes, family and friendships.

Oh, the drama

This fall, juniors Kamio Green and Emily Lara brought a new creative outlet to Detroit Cristo Rey with the founding of a drama club. With more than 15 participants, it’s already a huge hit among students.

Volunteers help improve community

During the second week of September, hundreds of volunteers from General Motors, Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV), Ideal Group, and Detroit Cristo Rey gathered for what is known as teamGM Cares Week to improve areas of the city through community service projects.

Union Strike affects work-study program

At midnight Sept. 16, more than 46,000 UAW members walked off the job in a national strike against General Motors. The effects of the 40-day walkout rippled through the industry and community, including Detroit Cristo Rey High School.
