Hungry college students seek help from food pantries By Miaun McCloud As if balancing the stress of a heavy work load, keeping grades up, and tuition payments aren’t enough, college students all throughout America are in debt and starving.   “I would feel like I need to go back to momma and daddy and survive off them," said senior Lapria Junior, who will soon be a college freshman. Universities are accepting more and more low-income students; yet the price of a higher education is steadily rising.

CMA hosts annual senior pinning

Senior Pinning Breakfast Ceremony  By Amanda Duren  The Communication & Media Arts High School senior class hosted its annual Senior Pinning Breakfast ceremony at the Atheneum Suite Hotel in Downtown Detroit. The ceremony provided parents, guardians, faculty and staff an opportunity to acknowledge the seniors of 2017 as candidates for graduation; along with their many accomplishments.  The class pledged to focus on opportunity, vigilance and success. At the ceremony, parents and guardians pinned their student senior, and then they were given a red rose by Principal Donya Odom. “It was a really good pledge and showed lot of character to our parents and guardians,” said CMA senior Darnell Thaxer.  Guest speaker Dr. Donald Bryant Jr.

History teacher wins $2,000 in school supplies

History teacher wins $2,000 in school supplies By Camryn Walker and Shontell Butts Several weeks ago junior Hafizur Rahman from Benjamin Carson High School wrote an essay about history teacher Cody Lown for a contest from Comerica Bank called the “Tools for Schools Contest.” Rahman won the contest for his 400-word essay about Lown. The contest asked students to write about how their chosen teacher made an impact on their life and why they think the particular teacher deserved school supplies in their classroom.

Two years ago West Side Academy teacher Nadirah Muhammad donated a kidney to student Aja Booth. Both are doing well today. Booth, who graduated from WSA in June 2015 and is currently attending the Everest Institute.

Teaching goes beyond the gradebook

Two years ago, West Side Academy of Information Technology and Cyber Security physical education and health teacher Nadirah Muhammad noticed that one of her dance students, Aja Booth, had been struggling with kidney failure for some time. Wondering if she could be of service to her, Muhammad decided to get tested and she found out she was a match and would be able to donate one of her kidneys to Booth.

Loyola debaters advance to Nationals

Loyola High School’s debaters are on the rise. Two of the school's debaters, sophomores Kyle McBeth and Elijah Stringer are traveling to Salt Lake City the second week of June for Utah where they will be competing against the top debating teams in the country. The two young men earned the opportunity to compete at the national level after they qualified during a tournament at Wayne State in March.
