In 2015 and 2016, Cass Tech students worked as paid corporate summer interns with the Ilitch Companies.

In March of 2015, Cass Tech students learned they would have the opportunity to work as paid corporate interns with the Ilitch Companies. The Ilitch family owns 11 companies, including the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, and Little Caesars Pizza. Principal Lisa Phillips proactively sought the prestigious internships for her students after meeting with Ilitch Company executives in the months leading up to the announcement.

There was stiff competition for the positions, as the criteria stated that students must be at least 16 years old, maintain a 3.0 grade-point average and students must apply and be interviewed by both Cass Tech administrators and Ilitch Company managers during the selection process.

Nearly 300 students applied for the 24 available positions.

“I have always wanted to work in corporate America prior to graduating from college because I believe it’s the best avenue to expose me to a real life work experience," Kourtney Lots said.

In June of 2015, the 24 interns were welcomed by the Ilitch staff during an elaborate reception held in the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit. Those in attendance were Cass Tech administrators, the 24 interns and their parents, Ilitch Company executives, and members of the Detroit City Council, along with other Detroit community leaders.

“The internship program exposed me to opportunities I could have never dreamed of, as I am working in Corporate Communications, alongside some of Detroit’s best," Imora Perez said.

Phillips wanted to ensure her students worked in corporate positions only, as she proclaimed Cass Tech’s students have been taught various aspects of finance, communications, graphic arts, security and various other areas that will allow them to exhibit excellence in the job market. Throughout the summer, the interns met with staffers who shared their stories with the students and mentored them about attaining career goals during and after college.

The internship program was so successful, that Ilitch Companies president Christopher Ilitch approved an extension of the program for the summer of 2016. This past summer, 24 interns were able to work as paid corporate interns in various Ilitch companies throughout metro Detroit. Five of the previous 24 interns returned for a second stint--some stayed with their past positions, while others ventured into new territory.

Phillips said she hopes the partnership with the Ilitch Companies is the start of something long-lasting, as she seeks to continue to provide opportunities for her students.

“I am so happy we have a principal who goes above and beyond to provide once in a lifetime opportunities for her students," Cass Tech senior Hunter Phelps said.
