Girls softball season begins at Cody this season. It has been at least four years since Cody had a softball team. The ladies are excited to play against many great teams in the Detroit Public Schools league. The team has played well and with excitement against these DPSCD schools.

More than 130 students attended the Tigers baseball game on April 16 to celebrate the end of the state testing. Students had to complete their tests and come to school everyday the week of April 8.

On Jan. 15 , Ben Carson High School sophomore Gabriel Dent was accepted into MSU FutureDOcs Program. Hosted virtually this year, FutureDOcs has students interacting with physicians, medical students and other healthcare professionals virtually via engaging activities.

Arise Rock, a sophomore at DSA is a talented actor, avid reader and also a published author of two books. Her first book, “The Trail to Home,” is a story about a girl who travels to Oregon with her family during the 1800s. Written in free verse, Arise concisely captures the treacherous journey from Illinois to Oregon.

Detroit Public Schools Community District has partnered with 24 arts organizations to create the Detroit School of Arts Pathways Initiative. According to a DPSCD press release, the “initiative is designed to position DSA as the premier arts school in Metro Detroit and to develop students’ talent in the years to follow.”

Shakespeare in Detroit, partnered with Detroit School of Arts, presented the play Romeo and Juliet on Nov. 14-15. Those who attended the play loved the production and thought the play was a success. Many DSA Theatre students performed in the play.

On Oct. 18, West Side Academy held its annual homecoming pep rally prior to the homecoming dance. Staff and students participated in various events including a basketball shooting contest, tug-of-war, cheers and a dance routine. Although the school does not have a football team, the students came out to represent their classes and support the other fall teams.

Although Cass Tech's Jaylen Kelly-Powell and MLK's Ambry Thomas have been playing together since little league, the two attended different high schools. Recently the two announced that the University of Michigan will be their home for the next few years and they both plan to enroll early.
