Southeastern High School has a busy but enjoyable experience touring college campuses thanks to a grant from the Detroit College Access Network.

In April, students toured Western Michigan University (WMU) and Jackson College.

Counselors chose WMU and Jackson College because both are Detroit Promise participating institutions. WMU is the only institution that is first dollar. Jackson College is a community college with a housing option that also allows our students who choose to explore skilled trades an opportunity to experience college.

Students also toured Central State University in Ohio. Central State was selected because it is the closest public HBCU, is a land-grant institution that offers in-state tuition for Southeastern students and is only 3 1/2 hours from Detroit. The overall grade-point average for admission is 2.5+, which is flexible.

Going to college becomes attainable when it is affordable, and students believe it is possible. Two students confirmed that CSU is their college of choice on the trip, Ja’Caleb Watley and Tatyanna Broadnax.

One student confirmed his commitment to WMU and one committed to Jackson College.

“This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship,” said Southeastern Counselor Rakiba Mitchell. “We hope to return next year.”
