Being selected the 2018 class valedictorian is a tremendous honor. It is the
first glass ceiling of many that I hope to break. Getting to this point was no
easy feat but accomplished because of dedication and perseverance. To achieve
this goal, students must work diligently from the moment they step into high school.
The most important factor is to develop an exceptional support system that will
uplift and support throughout high school epoch.

For years, the Detroit Public Schools (DPS) system has been suffering from ill-fortune. The district had accumulated several years of debt, the curriculum has become outdated, there has been no increase in teachers’ pay for 10 years. Last year DPS became the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) to erase the district’s debt. This year, the DPSCD school board appointed Dr. Nikolai Vitti the new superintendent to save the district.

High school life can be tough for freshmen. With a new environment, they can be very impressionable. Aside from school issues like academics and peer pressure, they may have challenges in their personal life. The Students Teaching About Relationships and Success (STARS) was started in 1996 to help these students. King inclusion in the program started in February.

The evolution of the automobile has transformed how Americans view the traditional car. Henry Ford brought cars to the masses with the utilitarian Model 5, and then in 1935 he successfully crafted and produced the Model A1, which was designed for comfort, space, and affordability. After the success of the Model A1, the general concept of a car has evolved to be the advanced, technological machines we think of today.

Christmas is a traditional Christian holiday celebrated by millions across America. Christmas marketing is heavily pushed beginning in early November as soon as Halloween is over. With the strong push of Christmas in supermarkets, malls, restaurants, and other places of business, other religious holidays taking place during the Christmas season are neglected and go unrepresented.

Donald J. Trump: businessman, author, television personality, sexist, xenophobe, and 2016 republican presidential nominee. Trump wants to “Make America Great Again” and he’ll get to Pennsylvania “one way or another.” Trump is one of few people who have run for president with zero political experience, but Trump is the only one who has made it far enough to be their party’s nominee. So the question must be asked: Is Trump truly fit for the presidency?

There have been several movements to gain racial equality for people of color. San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick reignited a social movement within athletics on Aug. 26 when he refused to stand for the National Anthem.

On April 5, Michigan Office Solutions and the Detroit Red Wings presented high school journalism students with a challenge: Write two 500 word essays in the hopes of winning grants ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 for their school’s journalism program. The essays also ensured participating students a spot at attending the High School Journalism Day at Joe Louis Arena.

Across the nation, it isn't uncommon for students to graduate early. Students graduate a year or more earlier than expected because they’ve earned all their credits. At King, the youngest graduate of the class of 2016 is Joe Faryean at the ripe age of 15, who entered King in 2012 at just 12 years old.

Students and teachers in the Detroit Public School system have been operating under dangerous, unhealthy conditions for years. For the past few months, DPS teachers, students and parents alike have been fighting to improve the continually declining conditions of the schools.
