This school year has been a rollercoaster ride for the Crusaders boys varsity basketball team. They won two championships but faced several hurdles to get there.
In June 2020, King senior Danielle George started her business because of her love for nice clothes and accessories. Because of the pandemic, she turned her fashion sense to an online boutique. Her boutique, RoyalB Kloset, is named after her two nieces, Royal and Brazyl.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They were intended to provide education for the African-American community. Yet, there are white, Mexican, Asians, and many other ethnicities allowed to attend these schools. If the point of an HBCU is to give Black students a chance to receive a higher education, how is this fair?
Amid the coronavirus outbreak, all Secretary of State branches in Michigan were closed. This left many new drivers without a license and other citizens without an ID. Each branch reopened at the beginning of June and citizens are now seen by appointment only.
Being a visual learner is the hardest part of virtual school. Seeing my classmates, teachers, and administrators through a screen is not what I wanted my new normal to be--especially during senior year.
On Jan. 19 and 20, King held the 11th Annual MLK Legacy March: “The Dream & the Dean, The Legacy Lives.” This showcased civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “dream” and Congressman John Conyers Jr.’s activism to maintain the “dream.”
Senior Ridgeley Hudson has worked in his community since the age of 10 by participating in several outreach initiatives within his community and school district. He is a member of the executive board of the Detroit Public Schools Community District Council. Also, he is a youth minister at church, Perfecting Triumphant Overcomers Church located in Detroit.
It was a very emotional week for King’s band students when they learned that Ronald Perkins, Jr., band director, must leave to serve his country. Perkins will start a new job with the U.S. Army. He began training Nov. 18 but won’t start the actual job for a year.
