Renaissance: Kanye receives visionary award at this year’s BET Honors

By Desmond Johnson Staff Editor

Rapper, songwriter producer, clothing designer and all around entrepreneur Kanye West was the recipient of this year’s BET Visionary Honor Award on Feb. 23rd. West won this award for his creativity in the stylistic lyrics of his music.

“I’m so in love with his music,” said junior Nia Little. “I have all of his album and mixtapes. My favorites are College Dropout and Graduation.”

Dressed in an all-black tuxedo, West and his wife Kim Kardashian walked the red carpet together before sitting on the front row of the audience.

Kim and West seemed to truly enjoy the evening full of awards and entertainment.

“Kim [Kardashian] was moving to that beat,” said junior Niteah Griffen. “She loves that good ol’ black music.”

Not that music has a specific color, the performer list was full of African American entertainers. The list includes Usher, Patti Label, Trey Songz and the queen of R&B Mary J. Blige.

West’s acceptance speech was probably the most memorable of the evening.

“The things he said were truth, as always. I love how he denounced racism in America. We need more rappers in the music game like him [West],” said junior Alton Kirksey.

Kanye has gotten himself in trouble a few times for his sometimes blunt and arrogant comments.

“He is a good artist,” Kirksey added. “He just needs family love.”
