This school year King has a new wrestling team led by head coach Andre Foster Jr. In their first year, the team won the PSL championship.

“We won because of our excellent coaches and wrestlers,” sophomore Chris Jones said. “We won because of our determination and attitude not to lose.”

Freshman Don Spillers has been wrestling since he was young and was attracted to King’s wrestling team because he knew the coach. Spillers advanced to the Michigan Wrestling Association All-State Individual Honors.

“I have been wrestling since I was 4 and I was interested in wrestling at MLK,” Spillers said. “I heard that one of my AAU wrestling coaches was the head coach and I was more excited to join. I was determined to put in the hard work. I was really motivated by the team, family, and friends.”

The wrestlers know their coaches put in a lot of time for them to have wins.

“Honestly, it feels good because we won and I know we’re going to win many more,” Jones said.

It is expected that the remaining wrestlers will carry on the tradition of achieving championships. In order for this to be the case, hard work and preparation is needed.

“We worked hard,” Foster said. “We ran and we lifted weights. We completed drills and skills. We watch films and we do a lot to prepare our kids.”

Because of his experience, Foster is confident about the upcoming year and competitions.

“It’s no pressure as a four-year head coach,” Foster said. “I have been there four times already so it’s really no pressure.”
