EEVPA health fair helps students manage mental health

East English Village Preparatory Academy at Finney’s Germaine Clinkscales has been a teacher for more than 30 years. She teaches health and business education classes at EEVPA. The Voice of the Ville talked with Clinkscales about the school’s annual health fair, now in its third year. 

Voice of the Ville: Every year, you host a health fair. Can you explain the purpose of the health fair? 

Clinkscales: The purpose of the health fair is for all students and staff to be proactive with their health. Some things that may have forgotten about such as colon cancer screening. So, we want to make sure they stay informed. We also do mental health so that the students and staff stay informed about how to manage their mental health. 

Voice of the Ville: How do you select the participants? 

Clinkscales: I review what the city of Detroit has to offer in all of the health facilities and that is how the vendors are selected. 

Voice of the Ville: What is your process for ensuring that the health fair is a success? 

Clinkscales: I make sure there is a variety of health practitioners, nutritionists, physical activities such as boxing, stretching, and meditation. 

Voice of the Ville: Why are you so passionate about educating young people about prevention and living a healthy lifestyle? 

Clinkscales: The youth are our future, and they must be alive and well to
