Michigan State University law students came to Cass Tech on April 5 to lead a presentation on “Know Your Rights Day.” The purpose of the presentation was to give practical advice to students, particularly to students of color on interacting with the police.

The law students visited several pre-arranged classrooms and the reception was positive in all classes.

Senior Jayden Langford said most students do not know how they should respond when pulled over or questioned by the police.

“Not at all … I don’t really think they know how to properly assess those situations,”said Langford.

Senior Lolbe Rubio said her biggest takeaway is to always comply with the police, while also knowing your rights and knowing what to say and do when you may encounter the police.

Rubio feels that all students could benefit from the know your rights presentation and encourages others schools to include it sometime during the school year.

“The presentation should be given in other schools…because we’re all learning how to drive and we’re bound to be stopped by a police officer and knowing your rights would greatly benefit us,” Rubio said.

This was the third year that MSU law students have come to Cass Tech.
