On March 14, Cass Tech newspaper students attended a journalism workshop that was focused on investigative journalism. The workshop was held at Wayne State University.
The workshop introduced students to media professionals, journalism professionals and current college journalism students. CT newspaper students were able to explore journalism career opportunities and more.
Eye on Michigan, a nonprofit student program, sponsored the event. The organization’s goal is to recruit and train upcoming investigative journalism reporters.
Huel Perkins, retired lead anchor, Fox 2 Detroit; Nicole Avery Nichols, editor, Detroit Free Press; and Marlon Walker, managing editor, The Marshall Project, were some of the featured presenters.
“My highlight was definitely... meeting so many journalists,” senior Ximar Lopez said. “I didn’t expect that to happen, we were able to sit and talk to a bunch of them [with a journalism degree].”
Senior Hasibul Hassan has been on the newspaper staff for the past three years at CT and said the event helped him to decide about continuing his journalism studies in college.
“I plan to either minor or major in it, depending on what college I go to,” Hassan said.
Hassan said he knows networking is so important in the field of journalism.
“I learned that going into the journalism field is gonna be hard, but if you have a lot of networking and you meet a lot of people throughout the way, it’s gonna be easy for you,” Hassan said.
