Cass Tech’s orchestra received a perfect score in the District Band and Orchestra festival on March 2.

Deanna Burrows, Cass Tech’s music director, said Cass Tech is a Class AA school, which means that Cass Tech’s orchestra has to play the most difficult repertoire that is performed at these festivals.

The orchestra prepared and practiced regularly in preparation for the annual festival. Burrows, who has participated in these festivals for 22 years, said this year’s group of students stood out.

“I’m just really encouraged by their dedication … for the future because both of these groups did so well at festival,” Burrows said.

Senior Yanine Thurmond said that the highlight of the festival was performing on stage and being completely in the moment.

" … Forgetting about everything that happened prior and just, like, being on stage and fully enjoying the moment,” Thurmond said.

Thurmond has been playing the cello since seventh grade. She also plays the piano, drums and the ukulele. She shared advice for students who are interested in playing instruments.

“Go for it,” she said. “Practice and practice a lot … just practice and practice and play a lot whenever you have the chance.”
