CMA is hosting a food drive for the upcoming season, made possible by the Introduction to Communications teacher Scott Conwell.

Conwell has partnered with Gleaners Community Food Drive to collect canned and shelf-stable food to donate. In the previous year, more than 1,000 pounds of food was collected and donated to those in need.

Gleaners is a community food bank running since 1977 and is a part of Feeding America.

The CMA Communicator talked with Conwell about the club and food drive.

CMA Communicator: Why did you start the “We are the Change” club?

Scott Conwell: OK, it started off as a district initiative to engage students in civic responsibilities and activities. Last year the district initiative ended, but I feel like a lot of the work that we’ve done with the food drives and the hygiene drives and things like that are important enough for the community and for the students that I continued the club on our own, so I don’t know how many schools have them anymore, but we still have our club.

CMA: Why did you choose Gleaners?

Conwell: I think they have a really high impact on the entire area of metro Detroit.

CMA: Would you try another food bank?

Conwell: I have looked at the other ones, but Gleaners was easiest to work with.

CMA: Are you planning any future events or donations?

Conwell: I want to do the personal hygiene drive again and this spring, I would really love to be part of the beautification process of the outside of the building, for the students and for the neighborhood to get some things planted; instead of just a whole bunch of dead things everywhere in the yard and we’re also planning a trip to go to Gleaners itself to help them distribute the food items. We have a community bank that they come, and people around here can get food for free.

CMA: Do you remember how much food CMA has collected in previous years?

Conwell: We provided over 400 meals, which I for the first time that we did a drive I was pretty happy with of this year we have not only the food drive but we have cash donations and we have electronic cash donations for the virtual food drive as well are you planning anything other than drives or donations for the club I’m waiting for
