Seniors lead the way at BCHS

Ben Carson High School held its upper class student elections in September. Seniors make up most of the student leadership, which is by design.

“The goal is to have the seniors lead, while at the same time mentor the younger students to be student leaders, “ said social studies teacher Frank Odeh, who is the student council adviser.

The 2022-2023 Student Council consists of seniors Trey’Von Holston (senior class president), Mary Cooper (vice president), Shayla Dysard (treasurer), and Leila Waters (secretary). Senior representatives are: Serenity Hunt, Tyler Myers, and Ayran Paige.

Juniors council members are: Akia Eashi (junior class president), Deanna Rutland (vice president), and representatives, Maria Brewer, Tashin Oporna, Emeka Shamcy, and Deasia Jones.

Sophomore representatives are Charon Cartwright, Kyrie Collier, Briana Haynes, Jamiyah Jackson, Cherish Maddox, and Lauryn Barlow.

Freshmen representatives are Aryelle Johnson, Tyla Mack, and Geovanni Dickerson- Representative.

Student council has been a fixture at BCHS but has been a dormant group the last few years.

“COVID took a lot of the momentum,” Odeh said. “We were building to make student council the vibrant organization its needs to be in our school community. With the strong support we have from the administration, our group will be the leaders of the school and be a visible force.”

Principal Dr. Sean Lively has a dedicated room on the first floor for student council headquarters.

Student council was instrumental in planning the Senior Pinning on Oct. 7. The Senior leadership also planned Homecoming.

Freshmen Geovonni Dickerson said: “Student council has been good a positive for me. I look forward to learning as much as I can.”By Aryelle Johnson and Tyla Mack
