Is TikTok good or bad for teens?

On Sept. 19, instead of being banned, TikTok was purchased by the companies Walmart and Oracle due to TikTok having tremendous advertisement potential and for breaching privacy regulations by taking users’ data without consent.

According to an article in Forbes, 20% of TikTok is owned by Walmart and Oracle, while the other 80% is owned by the Chinese parent company ByteDance.

TikTok has been controversial since its debut in September 2016. Since its released, it has garnered 100-million users in the U.S. alone. Many people use TikTok now and it has become a part of most teens’ daily life. Due to the excessive wave of popularity it has gained, TikTok being banned was against most teens’ agenda.

“Hearing that TikTok was about to be banned made me mad because I would lose all of my followers that I have gained over the past three years," King junior Cinsear Williams said. "I've been using TikTok since 2017 and I do not feel that it is a bad app."

Many teens see TikTok as their source of joy. According to Oberlo.com, users spend 58.5 minutes on TikTok a day.
