New initiative helps Cass Tech seniors make a difference

Can high school seniors impact the lives of elementary and middle schoolers?

In October, Cass Tech principal Lisa Phillips and coach O’Brien started the initiative CT T.I.M.E.S. which stands for Cass Tech Tutoring in Middle and Elementary Schools.

“CT T.I.M.E.S was created for high school students to give back to the youth and tutor them,” said Cass Tech senior Jordan Grant.

CT T.I.M.E.S. allows an opportunity for Cass Tech seniors to go out of their comfort zone and teach instead of being taught. Making connections with younger students and further their learning while giving them advice on high school.

Getting started with CT T.I.M.E.S, Phillips made an announcement on the PA during rec room to allow any senior to participate if they were interested.

“I chose to participate because when I was younger I wish someone would’ve helped me or at least was there for me just to talk to and learn more,” said Cass Tech senior Jordan Grant l.

“I like helping people, helping improve in their studies and practice for high school life," said Cass Tech Senior Emily Hernandez.

Teaching students and helping them achieve a new skill is not CT T.I.M.E.S. tutors only objective, explaining the process of high school, what our experiences are, and how students manage time.

“CT T.I.M.E.S can help the students learn and retain information in new ways and make social connections with someone who Is older than them which can build confidence and social skills,” said Cass Tech Senior Jordan Grant.

Hernandez is one of the many Cass Tech seniors who participate in CT T.I.M.E.S. Every Thursday she spends two hours at Munger elementary/middle school, which is one of the many middle/elementary schools partnered with Cass Tech. Hernandez and one other Cass Tech senior tutor six middle schoolers on math, science, reading, and writing, once the students finish their homework, they start asking questions about high school and how it impacted our lives.
