Is being at a small school an advantage when you take standardized tests?

Every junior in DPSCD schools will take the SAT in April of 2018. The SAT is a standardized test that determines whether or not you’re college ready. This test includes four main sections: reading, language, and two sections of math.

Everyone wants to get the perfect score. Do smaller schools like Benjamin Carson High School have more resources for students to do well on the SAT or ACT?

Larger schools in the Detroit area can have 1,500 students or more.

Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine, in comparison, is a small school community with about 400 students.

“Small schools provide better education than larger schools,” said Charles Todd, principal of Benjamin Carson High School.

“We provide SAT tutorial programs, after-school tutoring, and online Khan academy SAT practice,” said Todd.

All juniors at Benjamin Carson are required to do SAT prep in advisory class.

With all this preparation, are students really ready to take the SAT?

“Ben Carson High School prepares students on every subject,” said junior Shayma Akhtar, “The teachers actually take their time and look over sample SAT questions. They provide helpful and easy tips for each part on the SAT.”

After taking the SAT students feel that there were right on track and can help others.

James Evans, a former student of Benjamin Carson High School, said, “Each teacher personally prepared me to take the SAT.”
