As part of the National Registration Day on Sept. 7, civil activist Rev. Jesse Jackson along with Detroit mayor Mike Duggan and other political leaders, gathered at Cass Technical High School for a rally stressing the importance of voting to CT seniors.

Jackson expressed the importance of young people voting and encouraging others to vote.

“Not only go out and vote but take your parents with you, take your friends with you,” Jackson said.

Jackson said several statements then asked the students to repeat after him.

"I can dream beyond my circumstances" and "whatever I plant, I will reap what I sow" were just some of the few sayings Jackson had the students repeat to uplift their spirits.

"I can’t believe I shook hands with Jesse Jackson,” said Tamera Tabb, a senior at Cass Tech. “He’s an inspiration to a lot of people.”

Jackson closed the rally by calling students on to the stage who were 18 or who would be 18 by Election Day. He also gave advice on what students that cannot vote can do to feel involved in the election.

“Volunteer and get your grandparents to vote, get your parents to vote, there are many things you can do besides just vote,” said Jackson.

Many students left the rally inspired to vote and remembering these words from Jackson, "You are not our future. You are our right now.”
