Detroit Churches Owe Big

The churches of Detroit, Michigan are getting hit with a big bill for their water usage. Pastors for the Baptist churches stood up to the water company for these spikes in their water bill.

The bill for churches will go up from about $500 a month to $1,000 and that’s for regular household usage of water. This water bill charges each church per square footage of their property.

“These prices for the new water bills for the churches is a wrongdoing for being in church for about three to four times a week,” said Pastor King of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on E. State Fair in Detroit, Michigan.

“These new water bill prices would put my church in a crisis if my congregation doesn’t start doing tithes and offering and giving more to this church," said King.

This new bill strongly affects churches because churches are rarely in church for a whole week. Some say the water company is overcharging churches for three days out of the week of water usage.

“We will protest until the water company stops charging us high water bills for only twelve days of water usage in a whole month.” said Rev. Damon Pearson, also of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.

Some pastors that have suggested to their churches that they conserve more water than usual. While many churches believe they can overcome this water charge, some churches may have to close their doors.
