Musician honors roots in Detroit

Deidre Smith, 32, also known as D.S.Sense, is an up-and-coming recording artist from Detroit who dedicates her time to inspire the youth and represent her city in the most positive way.

Smith is one of the artists on a new mixtape called “World Hip Hop Woman.” Smith recognized her passion for music at a young age listening to the beat of “Sesame Street.”

“I think I’ve been molded by experience. I’ve seen tragedy and triumph, I had wins and losses but I am inspired by stories of the underdog,” said Smith.

Smith visits Cass Tech frequently to speak to the students in the newspaper and journalism classes for inspiration and motivation to follow every dream they have.

When some people hear of Smith they may know of her famous chant “On My Detroit Everything.”

“’On My Detroit Everything’ possess and expresses a great sense of pride in my city and the faith I have in its citizens,” Smith said. “It means I am Detroit and all that it encompasses.”

That tagline is now available on merchandise (www.onmydetroiteverything.bigcartel.com). She is a fan of her city through the good, bad, and the ugly. Smith wants everyone to appreciate where they came from. She believes everything in her city is beautiful regardless of the circumstances.

D.S.Sense has performed with Talib Kweli at the State Theatre, and also at the SASHA Center for its third annual “Poets and their Purses” and “Middle Finger to Cancer.” She was just featured in an article in the Metro Times.

She recently released a video in celebration of 313 Day Detroit that shows feminine presence in hip-hop. She has her own website (dssense.bandcamp.com) that posts music when she records a new song. You also can reach her on her Instagram, @Dssense.
