Pershing: Murder mystery train catapults students into second semester

By Icis Shufford Staff Writer

As a kick starter into the genre of mystery, Pershing students experienced the dissolute relationship between correctional officers and inmates on the Murder Mystery Train.

The slow motion train cascaded down the railroad tracks in Blissfield, about an hour south of Detroit, with the members of Pershing’s junior and senior classes and staff on board.

“When I first heard of the train I thought it would be more like a movie,” junior Tonieo Spann said. “[I thought] we would be the ones going around the room solving the mystery.”

Students were greeted by a toothless criminal followed by loud singing, weird voices and card tricks as they witnessed the secretive crime and the solving mystery.

“Pershing students are beginning the mystery genre. This will help enhance our knowledge of the genre. We are going to be reading a Sherlock Holmes book and this will help,” Pershing principal Shirley Brown said.

From pulling a card to being poisoned by a deranged stalker, Pershing students and staff were given hands on opportunities to participate in the show.

“I expected to be entertained,” said history teacher James Baker, “I did not expect to be the victim.”

The Murder Mystery Train allowed students to tap into their own inner detective. Pershing students in second semester of core classes will be solving their own murder mystery.
