King: Program mentors youth, creates brotherhood

By Delante Cobb Staff Writer

“I am Confident; I am Respectful; I am Faithful & Powerful; I am a Leader!”

This is the motto of The Chauncy Glover Project, a extensive hands-on mentoring program in Detroit. The program was created to mold inner-city young men into educated, financially responsible, well-mannered gentlemen.

CGP is split into two groups, the CGP Gents and CGP Young Gents. The CGP Gents consist of 11 male seniors who are in need of additional guidance and role models. A majority of the members attend King High School, even though they were chosen from dozens of applicants.

“The Chauncy Glover Project is a very educational yet fun program to be in,” said De’Nayus Johnson, a King senior and CGP Gent.

The members are paired with an adult mentor based upon their career aspirations and other interests.

The CGP Young Gents Consist of 15 young boys in grades fifth through eighth who attend the Detroit Services Learning Academy. The members were chosen by the principal and teachers of DSLA. These members are also paired with an adult mentor.

The program’s mission is to empower, encourage and inspire young men to become strong, moral and confident leaders of society.

“CGP isn’t just a program, it’s a brotherhood,” said Joseph Dukes, a King senior and CGP Gent.

The personal mission for the members is to show the world what young intelligent men look like.
