Douglass: Art club helps students understand history

By Kristian Craig Staff Writer

The Douglass History, Arts and Culture Club has a big project coming up. They are drawing pictures of famous African Americans who did something of importance.

“The History, Arts and Culture club looks at the history of arts and how people’s art reflects their lives,” said Okezie Iroha, award winning Douglass teacher.

Iroha said art history will give you an idea of what past eras and the people of those periods were like.

“For example, when you look at the cave arts when people did not know how to read or write, they created images that represented their world,” Iroha said.

Iroha said the students are currently in a competition doing a portrait of historic black figures of the student’s choice. They are using iconic figures like Malcolm X, W.E.B. Dubois, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks and others.

“Through arts you can begin to understand the past of the people,” Iroha said. Through the arts you can begin to reconstruct their past.”
