Ben Carson: Juniors prepare for ACT

By Cameron Campbell and London Jones Staff Writers

Benjamin Carson High School juniors are getting ready for their first experience with the ACT. They have been preparing for the test in classes this year and many are now spending some weekend hours on these studies.

Junior English teacher Kristen Maher tells students that preparation is key to success.

“Our juniors know how much weight the ACT carries in college admissions and scholarships, so they are working very hard to prepare for it,” Maher said.

“In addition to the standard course load, many of our students are enrolled in ACT Prep during the school day as well as attending Saturday sessions to learn new test taking strategies.”

On three Saturday mornings, Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 14, Benjamin Carson held ACT Prep sessions, which were offered for free for students by JNS Support Services. The first session focused on math and science tests. The second session addressed the reading and English tests, and the last session concentrated on the writing test.

The sessions were popular, with 47 students turning out for the second session.

“It is really important that the students feel prepared for the ACT,” history teacher Shannon Lockhart said.

“It is a very stressful time for my students and so I do my best to give them the tools that they need to help alleviate some of the anxiety that comes with the ACT.”
